I think LH is still Lynch's most complete film, but would also encourage you to visit Eraserhead with your newly-found enthusiasm and open mindedness for his style.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15283666.post-23731808491986171982007-02-20T00:51:00.000-08:002007-02-20T00:51:00.000-08:00That's one of the reasons I dig Lynch, too, and IN...That's one of the reasons I dig Lynch, too, and INLAND EMPIRE in particular. It's easily the creepiest thing I've seen in ages but at the same time resplendent, too. Manohla Dargis still has the best line that sums up the movie and it's terrors and beauties: they both lie in "Laura Dern's rubber band mouth." The scene when she's running, spot-lit, at the camera in slow-mo all self-distorted gives me the willies just thinking about it. But then there's the ending...pure bliss. (Another favorite scene, quickly, is when the husband puts his arm around Justin Theroux and delivers that monologue about the fidelity of marriage and the consequences ("dark they will be..") of betrayal.)

Still, Robert Blake in L H is fucking ill.

And Mike: you should check out the earlier stuff, if only for Blue Velvet and The Elephant Man, which I bought the other day for $5. I want a double bill of The Elephant Man with The Straight Story one week followed by Lost Highway with Mulholland Dr the next week followed by a solo run of INLAND EMPIRE.

I'm super jealous you guys got to see all those Mizoguchi movies... at least I'll get to see Woman in the Dunes when I'm visiting.Ryland Walker Knighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09233954424885027837noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15283666.post-82763368053297579652007-02-18T01:28:00.000-08:002007-02-18T01:28:00.000-08:00Yeah, Lynch can be creepy as hell. In fact, I have only seen his films from "Lost Highway" on.

I more than understand the argument that people cling to his work solely based on the open-endedness of the narrative and the frustration with all of the pseudo-intellectual posturing that inherently goes along with that.

Every time I have seen a film of his the first half is spent smugly saying to myself that I am one of the few that get it. Then all of sudden the rug is pulled out from under me. Repeated viewings tend to answer a few questions and unleash an avalanche of more.

But here is why I like David Lynch. My reason is utterly simple. I know of no director who can scare the bejeezus out of me with something as simple as a dark hallway or a video cassette. Watching his movies I am perpetually petrified. I don't know how he can shoot straight for my subconscious every single time.

Hey, did you get my note the other night at the Film Forum? Man, was I disappointed to miss that movie.Mikeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08400927064697543220noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15283666.post-13350288847644654072007-02-14T21:18:00.000-08:002007-02-14T21:18:00.000-08:00simple copy and paste solved it -- d'uh!simple copy and paste solved it -- d'uh!Ryland Walker Knighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09233954424885027837noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15283666.post-33293177290842082912007-02-14T11:50:00.000-08:002007-02-14T11:50:00.000-08:00Thanks. Have you gotten to Mulholland Dr. yet?

It's too bad you missed INLAND EMPIRE, really, cuz it has the only true happy ending in a Lynch film. And it's revelatory.
